Unless the language support is specifically set to Turkish, the Turkish character ‘ı’ displays a non-obvious behaviour in computing. It’s capitalisation is rendered as ‘I’, which happens to be the same than the capitalisation for the Latin ‘i’ character when the language is set to a Latin alphabet variation. If the language is set to Turkish, the capitalisation if the Latin character ‘i’ is ‘İ’, which doesn’t exist in the Latin character set… as opposed to ‘I’.

This obscure behaviour has an interesting consequence when dealing with string comparisons. For example, comparing ‘Yarın’ and ‘Yarin’ in lower case, will yell different results… but if we compare upper(‘Yarın’) with upper(‘Yarin’), they will be interpreted as the same string if the underlying language is NOT set to Turkish…

There… something to think during the bank holiday.

And if more info is needed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dotted_and_dotless_I#In_computing

It’s all about babies now. As illustration, here is an unedited internal Apsmartie email thread.

10:42, Rahul: http://goo.gl/JE4qr

10:51, Daniel: Lunch anyone?

11:11, Randal: Salt beef is unfortunately in my beef-bad-list, together with kidney and some exotic parts of the cow/bull. It was quite popular near Chancery Lane, tried once but thought the taste was a bit meh..

11:12, Rahul: You need to try it twice just to be sure. Good salt beef is - well good.

11:59, Daniel: Agreed. And you have a beef-bad-list?

12:04, Randal: You sound surprised? Someone with a large volume of beef experience and exposure needs to be able to exclude items from his beef playlist. It is all about user experience.

12:09, Daniel: I was under the impression that this person was a ‘real’ fan. For example, ‘real’ fans of David Bowie find equal pleasure in Space Oddity and The Laughing Gnome.

12:11, Randal: There is a subtle but important difference between fans and connoisseurs. I like to think I am in the latter category.

12:12, Daniel: Nice.

Shazam Player on USA Today! 3.5/4 Click here to see the article.

Shazam Player on USA Today! 3.5/4 Click here to see the article.

MPme, Curated Radio for iPad, Wins Midem Award

echonest:

Have you checked out how many radio options are on the internet these days? Not only can you get seemingly every single AM/FM station, but countless online stations can to fill your days with the sweet sound of programmed music.

People love online radio because it’s curated. Someone, something, or a combination of the two chooses the songs so that busy listeners don’t need to fret every few minutes about what to listen to next, and can go about their days in peace. However, finding the best stations for you has been practically impossible until now. What are you supposed to do, listen to each one and then decide?

A new, free iPad app called MPme does that work for you by curating radio itself. You might call it “curated curation,” or maybe “meta-curation.”

Using The Echo Nest’s technology, MPme listens to and analyzes thousands of online radio stations, then matches you to the best ones based on the music in your own personal collection — and, if you want, the Likes of your Facebook friends. Of course, you can share what you’re hearing on Facebook or Twitter, as well as buying favorite tracks from iTunes. But mainly, you can listen to the stations MPme knows you will like the most based on your music you already have.

This is powerful stuff — so much so that MPme took home top honors at the Midem music conference in Cannes, France last week in the “Music Discovery, Recommendation, & Curation” category.

Congratulations to MPme’s developer, Apsmart. We’re excited to power this award-winning iPad app.

(Check out more apps powered by The Echo Nest.)
